such a simple and common scam – it is sad to see staunch right wingers try and defend it.. The scam is thus: get someone on a plan involving payments and hard to understand penalties for being late. then cause changes in account that cannot be detected until too late to extort extra fees. it goes way back – probably back to the dawn of written contracts... Banks have many tricks:

- Changing of auto-payments to cause overdrafts or other extra fees
- Processing payments to cause maximum number of overdrafts
- % Rate changes for no reason. (as per their contracts, but still quite mean)
- Piling on fees and charges and then selling debt to a collection agency – thereby removing the ‘normal’ method of contesting the fees
- Contesting procedures that take so long, if fees are not paid immediately, there are serious financial consequences..
- Selling of accounts in general
- Bait and switch ‘free’ accounts
- Double and tripple charging for ATM fees.

These are just a small few. i am no expert. Ive found that by not having a credit card, and using the bank very very responsibly, i have few problems. But, I can totally see where those with bank account that empty regularly, it would be very easy to write software that identifies large swatches of people vaulnerable to simple little account manipulations. It is such an easy programming task, it would be shocking if these practices were not used to inflate

With 2011 only hours away and since most college students are off on winter break, now is a great time to focus on your finances for the New Year. Follow these three simple steps to ensure that your finances are safe for 2011:

1. Credit Cards: If you have credit card debt, determine exactly how much debt you’re in. Gather all of your credit cards and write down the amount you owe and the card’s interest rate. Next, call the credit card companies and ask them to lower the interest rate — speak to a supervisor if necessary. This phone call will usually result in your rate being lowered by 3-5%.

Next, try to pay more than the minimum payment on each card, even if it’s $10-$15 more — this will get you out of debt sooner.

If you don’t have a credit card, consider opening up a secured credit card, where you make a security deposit on the card, typically around $500. There are some fees involved, but after a few years of using the secured credit card responsibly, the credit card issuer will likely extend you a more traditional line of credit. Most secured credit cards report to the three credit bureaus: Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. This will ensure that you’re actually building credit history.

Remember, use the secured credit card for small purchases and pay the balance off in full and on time.

To ensure that you never forget to pay your credit card bill, ask the credit card company to automatically withdraw the money from your bank account each month. And always remember to review your credit card statement to ensure that there are no errors or suspicious activities.

Also, don’t open up more than one credit card. According to Sallie Mae, 50% of college students have over 4 credit cards! Opening up several credit cards within a short period of time hurts your credit score. The more credit cards you have, the more tempting it is to rack up thousands of dollars in debt.

2. Retirement: Even though you’re 35-40 years away from retirement, the earlier you start saving and investing for retirement, the more money you’ll end up with. Open a Roth IRA from a discount brokerage firm. In a Roth IRA, you deposit money that you’ve already paid taxes on! And since tax rates will most likely increase in the future, because of the high deficits and national debt, it’s better to pay the taxes now, rather than when you retire.

3. Expenses: Last semester, chances are you spent hundreds of dollars on restaurants, bars, coffee and shopping. Make it your New Year’s resolution to stop spending money on frivolous and useless items. Instead, use this money to pay off your credit card or student loan debt, or simply save the money! To help track your expenses, use this free Expense Calculator.

Managing your personal finances while in college is a daunting task. However, if you implement the suggestions above now, you will be in excellent financial shape by the time you graduate from college and enter the real world.

Scott Gamm is the founder of the personal finance website HelpSaveMyDollars.com and a finance major at NYU’s Stern School of Business. He has appeared on NBC’s TODAY, MSNBC, Fox Business Network, Fox News, ABC News and CBS.

This Little Girl Wanted To Come Home With Me by knittingskwerlgurl

Myrtle Beach Homes for Sale

You never know, as a young person, which of your acquaintances might wind up famous. One of my college friends, who was anything but a liberal at the time, went into politics a couple of decades later and served two terms as a liberal governor of of a western state. He is running for office again this year. Another friend–junior high school, this time, in South Dakota–survived a lot of ups and downs and has become sort-of-famous as a performance artist and left-wing rabble rouser.

His name is Bill Talen–William C. Talen, Jr.–and his family lived in my home town in South Dakota for a few years before moving to Wisconsin. His parents were, and his father still is, close friends with my parents. The family owns banks. Billy Talen has become well-known in recent years as a street-theater performance artist, Reverend Billy of the Church of Stop Shopping. He and his street theater troupe migrated to St. Paul for the Republican convention in 2008, and the Wall Street Journal ran an article about the “Reverend Billy.”

Yesterday’s New York Times theater section had a long article about the Reverend Billy and a new musical that just opened in Amsterdam, celebrating his achievements. Or something:

Two weeks ago Reverend Billy, the performance artist and activist best known as the leader of the Church of Stop Shopping, was plying his trade, public proselytizing. He and 15 members of the church’s choir traveled from New York to Washington to stage a protest as part of Appalachia Rising, a campaign to end mountaintop-removal coal mining. They gathered around a mound of symbolic dirt in the lobby of a bank that they say finances mountaintop removal, shouted “Hallelujah!” and sang folk songs. Reverend Billy was arrested for what his wife and performance partner, Savitri D, guessed was the 50th time.

Standard stuff for the Reverend and his crew of satiric rabble-rousers, who have built their lives around preaching an anti-consumerist, pro-environment gospel. …

The Amsterdam show is well-financed and apparently a big deal in the Netherlands:

It didn’t hurt that Reverend Billy already had a sense of the exuberant; they borrowed liberally from his staging — for example, when he goes into the audience and enacts a televangelist-style “exorcism” of credit cards.

“He takes the credit cards and falls down — we use that exactly in the show,” Mr. van der Meyden said. “It’s a great success because people have never seen that in Holland.”

The Dutch Reverend Billy, called Domini Bob, also bears a striking resemblance to Mr. Talen, down to his white suit.

Here is the real Reverend Billy:

The Times’ theater critic reports that Billy and his wife, Savitri D, were a little disappointed that the Amsterdam musical wasn’t more political. At the end, in fact, theater-goers are presented with gift bags, more or less the antithesis of the Church of Stop Shopping. I wonder, though, how many of the Reverend Billy’s street followers know about his trust fund. I’m guessing, not many. Life is funny, and highly unpredictable.

@Kleinias
It depends on what sites you frequent. If you’re a tech-junkie who opens a lot of tabs, Life handles and organizes simultaneous window / tab loading better. If I’m not mistaken, Life was less expensive when it came out.

Here’r my thoughts on Atomic and Life:

Atomic
- Lots of customization options, gestures, privacy options.

- My biggest peeve here is that every so often, when depressing a button to make the pop-up menu for opening the link in a new background tab appear, inexplcably, there are times when the window stubbornly refuses to do so, or when it does, sometimes there is only 1 option, which is to open the link in a new tab (instead of a background tab). This happens a couple of times every week, which has been sufficient to give me a reason to look at other browser options given the number of tabs I open in a single session.

Life
- Much less customization options. Loses the two-finger up and down gestures, but has one-finger side-swiping. No privacy options yet (?), or maybe I’m not looking at the right place. Arguably, the speed is faster for cycling webpages as your fingers work in the top area near the Q button, and you can swipe to the next window.

- Eye-candy. Interface looks clean and font selection makes it softer on the eyes. Bookmarks are in the form of snapshots. Yes, they look very nice.

- One thing I don’t like is when adding a new window, the keyboard automatically pops out. Since I have everything bookmarked already, I have to close the keyboard every time. To the developers – please add an option to keep this closed in the next version.

- Better window organization. My browsing is much less cluttered.

If you browse with only a few windows open and don’t care much about aesthetics, Atomic is probably a cheaper alternative. Otherwise, give Life browser a good look. It seems that there’s been a bit of a price increase since the time I bought it though.

Chances are, if you decided to get into shape you wouldn’t tell anyone right away. After a few weeks of running, dieting and lifting weights, when you start to see some results and people noticed, you would let the cat out of the bag. It feels sort of foolish to talk about it until you have taken some action.

Making a career change is the same way. This creates a conundrum: how do you get started if you don’t want to talk to anyone about it until you’ve done something? Forget the “starting a law firm” websites – you probably already know that you need a telephone and letterhead. So what is the first step?

The best place to start is to define your niche. This includes determining the services you will offer, the types of clients you will seek, your pricing strategy, your staffing and recruitment approach and your management structure. These will often change from your current platform. Focus on how you will be different from the competition. For those leaving Biglaw, a “vertical niche” strategy is often the way to go.

The next step is to put together a detailed financial forecast. This allows you to project the profitability and income you can expect to generate. It’s not much more complicated than estimating your revenue and then subtracting all of the expenses you anticipate. You can increase the precision of your revenue forecast by breaking it into small pieces. Try to project revenue by client, or by matter, or by task. On the expense lines, be sure to research and re-research costs to make sure that you haven’t overlooked anything. Then add some cushion, because you are bound to forget something.

The last thing to consider is whether you want a partner or not. A successful practice requires business development, professional development, business management and a leader who will motivate the team. If you are all of these things, then you can slap your name on the door and be done. If not, consider the types of partners you need to attract, how you will recruit them and where you are comfortable ceding control. Many firms go under because partners cannot get along, and many more fold because they are missing these ingredients needed for a successful practice.

Now you are ready to go public with your plans to start a firm. As you approach potential clients, partners and employees, focus on the differentiators and invite them into the thought process. The more people who take emotional ownership of your idea, the more likely it is to succeed.

If you are an in-house or Biglaw attorney, starting a firm might be the best career path for you. Contact NexFirm and we will give you the tools to decide. 646-666-8989 or www.nexfirm.com

The Best Wineries in California

As far as diversification goes, it’s a strange move for a technology company but after a year in the works, Twitter’s own brand of wine has launched.

This isn’t a crazy new monetization scheme though. The Fledgling Initiative is Twitter’s way of doing some social good while helping people enjoy a glass or five along the way. Proceeds from the sale of the wine will go non-profit organization Room To Read, helping them promote literacy in India.

As for the quality of the wine, Twitter’s Biz Stone says in a blog post today “These wines are being made using some of the best vineyards in California by the acclaimed winemaking team at Crushpad. Incidentally, 2009 appears to be an excellent vintage in California, potentially one of the best of the decade.”

If you order a case, just be careful not to drink and tweet. The wine is on sale in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay varieties here.

The Pasadena Wine Festival returns to the LA County Arboretum and Botanic Gardens on Saturday providing the perfect opportunity and ambience to remind us that we do live in paradise (not London, as the weather may suggest).

The festival is not just about wine, taking full advantage of the Arboretum’s acreage and natural beauty. Bocce ball, ultimate frisbee and horseshoes are among the activities to keep you buzzing through the afternoon with live jazz and salsa into the evening and under the stars. Top Napa, Sonoma, Paso Robles, and Santa Barbara wineries will be complemented by a Old World selections as well as tastings from Down Under.

There will be food and we’re talking trucks, not just cheese and crackers. World Fare, Crepe’n Around, Grilled Cheese, Border Grill and Sprinkles are among the trucks expected on site.

Traveling around the world, taking pictures and writing about your experiences. Who wouldn’t want to give up their day job in a fluorescent-lit cubicle to do that? While many of us daydream about faraway places, Gary Arndt, one of the most successful online travel bloggers, and creator of Everything Everywhere, sold his house and put his possessions into storage in order to travel around the world.

Speaking to a room full of hopeful world wanderers at BlogWorld and New Media Expo 2010, Arndt offered five tricks to building a career as a travel blogger and creating the kind of content that lets you trot the globe for a living. The session, entitled “Travel Porn,” provided helpful tips garnered from the most successful online content business of all, adult entertainment. What do travel writing and porn have in common? “Porn is people watching people do things you’ll never do with people you will never do,” Arndt says, and “travel readers are also people watching people do things you'll never do at places you will never go.”

Here are Arndt’s five tips for creating a successful travel blog.

1) Don’t forget the “money shot.” Photos are memorable, easily shareable and much more interesting than pages of text. Pictures of spectacular places are timeless and fuel our imagination in ways that words often can’t. Photos don’t require good spelling or grammar.
.
2) Be a porn star. “Content is not king. You are,” according to Arndt. We follow interesting people online, that’s why marketers use the term “conversational media” to describe social network communication. But who knows who wrote the articles in National Geographic or the travel guide in the local newspaper?

3) You can’t fake it. Bloggers have to find their own voice to find a loyal audience. And since travel writers typically share their own life experiences on the road, it’s important to be authentic and credible to build a following.

Airlines Are Beginning To Encourage Cuddling During Long Flights

Air New Zealand is beginning to offer what has been dubbed “cuddle class” seating. Basically it means that you and your snuggle-bunny will be able to snooze very comfortably after purchasing a row of seats that convert into a bed.

Naturally such seating will be only available on select flights and will come with an extra charge:

The upgraded seating configuration, to be fitted in the carrier’s new fleet of Boeing 777-300 aircraft, will cost the price of two standard economy seats plus half-price for the third seat in the row.

Additionally, the airline requests that you do keep your clothes on while snuggling. [AOL News]

Two weeks into the NFL season, two contenders from a season ago are already in some trouble. Both the Cowboys and Vikings have gotten off to a rough start. Can they recover?

1. New Orleans Saints (1): 2-0. That was a good win in San Francisco, it wasn’t easy, but the defending champs kept on rolling.

2. Indianapolis Colts (2): 1-1. The Colts responded to their week one loss in a big way, dominating the Giants in The Manning Bowl. Next they turn their attention to the Broncos in Denver.

3. Green Bay Packers (5): 2-0. They dominated the Bills as expected, and Aaron Rodgers was spot on. They now must travel to Chicago on Monday night to play a Bears team coming off a big win in Dallas.

4. Houston Texans (7): 2-0. This Texans team is different than years past. That comeback win in Washington tells a lot. Matt Schaub had 497 yards passing. Wow.

5. Pittsburgh Steelers (10): 2-0. The scary thing about the Steelers is that they could be 4-0 by the time Ben Roethlisberger comes back.

6. Baltimore Ravens (3): 1-1. New season, same result versus the Bengals. Joe Flacco was terrible, throwing four interceptions. They’ll rebound at home against the Browns.

7. New York Jets (9): 1-1. If Mark Sanchez can play like that, then the Jets have a chance to compete for a super bowl title. That was a big win for this team.

8. New England Patriots (4): 1-1. As Tom Brady so clearly pointed out in his interview, the Patriots were terrible in the second half, and could not get anything going. I feel sorry for the Bills this week.

9. Miami Dolphins (17): 2-0. The Dolphins defense has played tremendous the first two weeks of the season. This is a team that wants to be taken seriously in the AFC East. A win against the Jets on Sunday night would accomplish that task.

10. Cincinnati Bengals (12): 1-1. The Bengals rebounded nicely to their blow out loss in week one. Until someone beats them in the AFC North, it’s their division to lose.

11. Washington Redskins (11): 1-1. The Redskins let the game slip away in a game they had no business losing. The defense struggled late.

12. Atlanta Falcons (15): 1-1. The Falcons dominated the Cardinals all game long and now must travel to New Orleans in an NFC South battle.

13. San Diego Chargers (16): 1-1. The defense harassed David Garrard, causing four interceptions. Antonio Gates is on pace for a huge year.

14. Chicago Bears (25): 2-0. Mike Martz and Jay Cutler look like they are making a great team in Chicago. A win against the Packers monday night will let the NFC North know they are in it to win it.

To see at the happy crowd at Bistro 17 (facebook|website) on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, you’d never think that just 3 months ago, they were close to shutting down for good. Owner Anna Buckingham says,

“Business was so slow at that point, even during the tourist season, that we were wondering if we should call it quits.”

But now this French-themed restaurant with mouth watering brie and an obsession with containers and dogs is a word-of-mouth sensation and always busy. In fact, they’re one of the few restaurants doing really well in the off-season.

From closing to thriving… To what do they owe this remarkable turnaround?

Fortunately for Anna, one of her regular patrons runs a Hilton Head Island Facebook page with 65,000 fans. Anna tends to make friends with all her customers. So they teamed up, and created this winning combination:

  • Promotion and contests on the Hilton Head TravelTell Facebook page.
  • Radio-style call-in contests
  • Free mimosas

Partner With Large Facebook Pages

I’ve used this tactic myself in the past. When I was helping a Myrtle Beach hotel group grow its fan-base, we partnered with a large (200,000+ fans) Myrtle Beach destination Facebook Page to run a contest. The hotel group only had about 2,000 fans before this co-promotion. Within 24 hours we had crossed the 5,000 fan threshold and had 1,000 new emails from people who had indicated they were interested in receiving discount stay offers.

And it’s worth it to partner with smaller pages, too. Previous to this contest, we met another local marketer who had a Myrtle Beach themed page with 8,000 fans. He generously re-posted our contests for a few weeks and helped us gain hundreds of new fans.

Radio Style Call-In Contests

You’ve heard these all your life. I had too, so it was kinda thrilling to participate in one. And they work surprisingly well on Facebook. This means we should try to repurpose tactics that worked before the Internet and find out they work with the Internet.

Watch a video of how to answer Facebook contest call-ins!

Complimentary Alcohol? How Can You Go Wrong With That?

You have to be careful. Choose the wrong alcoholic drink, and you attract the wrong crowd.

But Bistro 17 chose to give away bottomless mimosas with breakfast. They’re not the first restaurant in the world to do this – in fact, none of what we’re talking about is completely new, but it all fits together and it gets more business. Fortunately, people who just want alcohol don’t tend to be attracted to the bottomless mimosa concept. It’s a common brunch item, and it fits the Bistro 17 menu. It’s also the kind of sparkly incentive that attracts more people and adds to the social lubrication that makes it fun restaurant to spend time at.

Passions and Promotion

Anna would shoot me if I didn’t mention her passion – Bistro 17 is dog friendly. They have dog bowls and treats on hand. She says,

“When people have their dogs here, they talk to each other more, and it’s a completely different place.”

For the business, it provides a unique advantage – one that increases social activity, which will solidify customer devotion and increase chances for word of mouth activities.

For example:

What can we learn from this to apply to promoting other local businesses? Having a secondary passion helps promote a local business.

Lessons: Social Is The Common Theme

If you haven’t noticed, being friendly and building relationships is core to all of the strategies mentioned above.

  • Make Friends: People with large Facebook pages don’t post your stuff for free if they don’t like you.
  • Focus on Service: No matter how much you promote a service business, if the people aren’t friendly, you don’t have service, and you won’t be able to keep or multiply the customers.
  • Alcohol makes people friendlier – generally
  • Use Social Objects: Both the Bistro 17 doggie dishes and the patrons’s dogs are social objects – they make conversations easier to start and they warm the heart. Smiles are more likely. And smiles at restaurants are good for business.

Brian Carter is a marketer, comedian, and writer. And he loves dogs and Bistro 17′s brie.

I’ve just spend a good part of my evening playing around with yogoguide – one of the coolest new online city explorer tools I’ve seen in a long time. At the moment, their service only covers Paris, but since that is my all-time favorite city I’ve got nothing to complain about.

Using the site is a treat – the center of the interface is a very clear map of Paris, to the left are categories, and on the right is where you’ll save your favorites. you can browse the map on your own, or let yogoguide point out the various categories. Once you’ve selected a category, you can narrow things down even more. For example – the hotels category sorts properties into luxury, charming, under 90 Euros, B&B, short term apartment rentals and hostels/camping sites.

Once you pick a sub-section, they’ll all be presented on the map ,and when you select a specific location, you get a handy little window showing reviews, the website, photos and more.

One of the smarter options on the map is the ability to overlay the metro map, the arrondissements and more – making it extremely simple to combine locations with reviews and ease of access. End result is that you can pick shops, entertainment, food and other activities and see on the map how to actually get there. Once you’ve explored the map and added favorites, you can even access the site using your mobile phone, which is perfect when you are abroad, just be sure you add an international data plan!

All in all, this is one extremely well designed city guide, but it is also just plain fun to use. The best part is that all your browsing can result in a perfect plan for your visit to this amazing city. All sections can be printed and you can save favorites to your yogoguide account. The site is free, as is the creation of an account, so head on over to yoyoguide and take it for a spin.

Short-term apartment and house rentals are getting more popular with travelers. These websites offer a convenient way to find them, and a measure of protection.

ROOMORAMA.COM
